Tips & Tricks for Holiday Decorating
We sat down with Molly Proul, President/Creative Design Director for Molly M. O’Neil, to see what she does to make her home feel special during the holidays.
WHAT ARE YOUR SIGNATURE DECORATIONS FOR THE HOLIDAYS?
Always decorate with live greenery! I always have garlands on my staircase and mantle, 2 large reefs on my front door, holly and amaryllis. Evergreen Nursery off Carmel Valley road is the best place to get your live greenery for decorating! I also love my advent calendar and I always hang stockings from my fireplace. Keep it classic!
LIVE OR FAKE TREE?
Live trees are the best way to go! Many people worry about the environmental risks of buying a live tree, but Christmas trees come from farms that are plant trees specifically for Christmas. They are not cutting them down from the forest!
WHAT ARE SOME TIPS ON DECORATING YOUR CHRISTMAS TREE?
I believe that you should either go for an elegant/designer look and stick to a monochromatic look OR go for a colorful and quirky tree by using family heirlooms to decorate. In order to create an elegant tree, stick to white lights and pick ornaments that have same color profiles, but different shapes. You can even ditch the ornaments all together and just use tons of white lights and top with a pretty star. For a more colorful tree, use ornaments that have been in the family and have a story behind them. Use large, colorful bulb lights (NOT the small colorful lights). Don’t use sparkles or bows- just keep it simple and clean.
THE BIG QUESTION: WHEN TO START DECORATING?
Some people start decorating the 1st of November; however I always stick to the weekend after Thanksgiving. This way, your live decorations will stay fresh until the holidays roll around!
